I wanted to practice quick loading with my Taurus Judge Magnum 3″ and ordered one set of the Snap caps in 45 Colt ammo size. They are sized identically to an actual 45 LC round and are great for practicing loading, trigger pull (without any damage to the firing pin), and they don’t scratch or get stuck in the chamber at all. They have a dark red shiny finish that actually does not scratch at all.

BUT I found a little problem that people might run into upon using their Snap-caps: I chambered 5 of the snap caps and then shut the chamber into the gun…but I noticed that the chamber needed extra pushing to get engaged into the gun, like there was something blocking it or dragging. I really had to force the chamber in! Usually it slides in and engages like butter…Then I tried pulling the trigger and each time it was like they were locked – I could not pull the trigger with one finger at all and the chamber would not rotate…I found out that a few of the Snap Caps’ dead caps had excess plastic material sticking out past the end of the bullet. This was causing a jam in the revolvers action and rotation because the plastic dead cap was protruding out so far it scraped and dragged against the gun itself. I had to get some nail clippers and my wife’s nail file to remove the amount of excess material. Feeling the other snap cap rounds, the correctly made dead caps were pushed in below the end of the bullet where you could run your finger across it and not feel a thing. On the “bad” rounds, there were obvious dead cap protrusions felt by running a finger across them.

So – very innovative product and great for practice loading while you watch TV or kill time. But hopefully you don’t get the defect where the dead cap protrudes out past the end of the bullet “casing.”

Here is some info printed on the back of the package:

    – “Non-explosive Dummy Rounds Ideal for Training”
    – “Solid Aluminum Construction”
    – “Hard Anodized” Finish, Ultra Smooth, Scratch resistant”
    – “Dead Cap Protects Firing Pin”

    – “Teach or Learn Safe gun Handling”
    – “Dry fire Thousands of Times without Damage”
    – “Ideal for training, Storage, Function Testing, Cowboy Action”
    – “Handles like Real Ammo!”

Weak Rim Vulnerability on Taurus, October 31, 2013

This review is from: A-Zoom 45 Colt Precision Snap Caps (6 Pack) (Sports)
Product: A-Zoom 45 Colt Precision Snap Caps (6 Pack)
    Purpose: Speedloading, speedfiring, flinch evaluation
Application: Taurus Raging Judge Magnum reload techniques

Conclusion: A-Zoom 45 Colt Precision Snap Caps moderately suitable for this particular application.

    Pros:
    – Product fits well in the test implement.
    – Product fits well in speedloader, producing desired “wiggle” tolerance for speedloading.
    – Product finish allows the unit to slide into the cylinder with acceptable tactile feedback compared to brass. To wit, the snap caps eject from the bore in a favorable manner.
    – Inexpensive testing and training solution.

    Cons:
    – Snap cap red finish deteriorates with repeated contact with hardened cylinder metal. This does not interfere with implement operation.
    – Using the following activity sequence; Load 6/Cycle 6, the snap cap rim deformed at cylinder mating surface after 37 trigger cycles per bore (37 reloads). Cursory investigation suggests that the inertia of the firing pin compresses the soft aluminum into the machined steel of the cylinder, reducing the thickness of the rim metal from 1mm to .6mm. 70 trigger cycles per bore reduced the rim thickness to .35mm. At this thickness, the A-Zoom 45 Colt Precision Snap Caps were discarded as “out of tolerance” for installation in a speedloader, as well as, unsuitable for further operation in the implement to avoid the snap cap from being forced into the cylinder bore.

I have these for all my guns. They are well made, durable and you can’t mistake them for live ammo. These are great for dry fire practice and for use at the range to load in the magazine to help your shooting by revealing flinching and anticipating recoil. Just have someone load your magazine so you don’t know when they are coming up. I find about 3 of them in a magazine works best, or in the case of a revolver, one or two in the cylinder works well.

These are so good you don’t even need to try other brands. Just get these and …fuhgettaboutit!
