Since I haven’t had a chance to use the ladder yet due to missing parts, I’ll comment on what I can. I like the design and the fact that it is adjustable. It is relatively narrow but this allows it to fit on the transom, which is the only place I can put it with a blind installed. The OEM packaging from Beavertail is poor (Amazon shipped the Beavertail box containing all components in a larger box, so this was not an Amazon issue). The rails and platform are just put in the box without any additional packaging to keep them from rattling and rubbing during shipping which caused the paint to wear off in several spots. Not a big deal for me since I will probably repaint it anyway.

Before I noticed that the hinge pin was not in the box (the critical missing part), I began putting the ladder together. The material, design and fit look pretty decent but the welding of the materials is fair. Several of the welds were boogers at best and there were 2 spots where the weld undercut the gusset, leaving a sharp corner.

There are 6 locking knobs to assemble and adjust the ladder. They are beefy and easy to adjust, even with gloves. The aluminum blocks they screw into for assembly are the worst part. They are tapped ~38″ aluminum. As most who work with it know, tapping aluminum requires patience, a sharp tap and lubricant. I was very careful when I started the 1st locking knob into the threads and stopped as soon I encounted any resistance. I removed the knob and inspected all of the tapped holes. 4 of the 6 tapped holes were gaulled up with ripped threads, right out of the box. This is clearly a manufacturing issue that needs to be addressed since it will make assembly difficult to impossible without chasing the threads with a good tap. Even then, the knob is only held by 3 or 4 good threads.

At that point I noticed the hinge pin was missing which made the ladder useless. I called Amazon and they are sending a new one, which I hope resolves the issue.

10/11/14 update – I received the replacement from Amazon. The packaging was slightly better with the pieces zip tied together and all parts were in the box. I checked the tapped holes and this one was worse than the first – with 1 hole completely reamed out to the point that the knob slid through the “tapped” hole, meaning the ladder cannot be assembled. 2 strikes. Can’t imagine this will be on the market much longer unless they address this.

Great concept as we have a large dog who likes to fish with my husband and sometimes jumps in with excitement.
This should solve the reboarding of our water dog on the boat. Item ordered from amazon via wayfair arrived on time.
Easy to assemble until last step when the rod to hold the “beaver tail” stp was not drilled, therefore, cannot use stair.
Called Wayfair, stated could overnite (fishing trip imminent) but would take 3 days. The email stated tracking confirm in 3 days,
arrival before 10 days. (Fishing trip will be over.) Suggested we call manufacturer who was “not available.” Disappointed….
will avoid this vendor and manufacturer in future.

At only 11-3/4″ wide, it’s pretty narrow. So even a small dog may have difficulty using it. Main complaint is that the 6 threaded blocks (for knob adjusters) are poorly threaded, resulting in loose, sloppy fit of knob adjusters. I had to use a M8-1.25 tap (with lubricating oil) to clean up the holes so the knob adjusters would thread in properly. Then the knobs screwed in better, but were still loose and sloppy. I plan to assemble using glue, Teflon tape, silicone sealant, or LocTite to take up the slop and add some friction to keep from loosing the knobs. When I complained to Amazon about all this, they promptly sent me a replacement which had all the same problems. So I believe this is a manufacturing problem will ALL the units. So don’t think, as I did, that they have resolved the problem by now. If it were 6″ wider with clean, properly threaded holes, I’d really like it. As is, I’m not too impressed. If you buy, be prepared to do some re-work of the threads as I did.
