The Steel Eagle is a solid rifle, July 19, 2015

I really like this rifle. Caught it on sale at a sporting goods store. Really wanted to try the NP2 but not fond of the new style thumb hole stock. Steel Eagle stock is very comfortable w/ grippy inserts at the forearm & grip. I wear size L gloves & the grip is perfect for me. It’s also a bit lighter than the thumb hole versions. it settled down quite a bit after about 150 rounds. Still working on best pellet types & haven’t run it across the Chrony yet, but can get 1″ groups consistently at 20 yards with cheap daisy flat nose rounds, with the occasional flyer, without a rest or vise. RWS Superdome 14.5 gr group about the same at 30 yards with less flyers.

The trigger seems to be metal but is not steel. The NP2 really is easier to compress than the original NP units, and less force is required in the last quarter of the cocking arc. Its waaay easier to cock than a 1st gen NP, Gamo IGT or Hatsan Vortex, but certainly has about the same power as the latter two. Have to use the artillery hold of course, but it’s not overly hold sensitive. It has a good sling setup but doesn’t come with one.

Now bad points, IMHO – one reason I deducted a star is the barrel shroud. I can work with it but it does twist sometimes while cocking the rifle. Hoping this does not become an issue. It’s also a very smooth gloss paint. It should have a flat/no gloss finish, which is correctable. The shroud is steel but the crown end cap with the baffle vents is plastic, as is the shroud to receiver transition piece.

The other reason is the Centerpoint,3-9X23 scope. Read the bad reviews & really wanted to make it work. Had it zeroed in with great groupings at x4. Took it up to x6 & POI moved 3″ to the left & 1″ high at 20 yrds. Zeroed again at x6 then turned it back down to x4. POI moved again. I could handle a change in elevation, but not in conjunction with a POI windage change every time the power is increased or decreased. So after about 60 rounds I swapped it out for a REX 3-9×40. Problem solved.

The Steel Eagle, along with a .22 cal & .25 cal XS28s are my go-to rifle for 20 acres of desert property. Will update if any problems develop but am so far enthusiastic about this purchase.

Excellent rifle, very pleased with its performance. Will take awhile (250 rounds) to break in, anxious to learn how much easier cocking gets and how much sound is generated. At this point, I like it a great deal.
