Since I bow and rifle hunt in very open steep terrain out west, along with missing a very nice archery buck last year at 50 yards and about 25 degrees of down slope, I figured I needed some help computing shooting angles on the fly.

This range finder is just what the doctor ordered. I have had several range finds to date, but this one tops them all. The 4X optical is a very bright lens, easy to see and calculate distances with while sighting in my bow out to 80 yards. Throw in the clear shot capability and you have your self a true winner.

Clear shot gives the bow hunter the reassurance required to make long shots and know your shooting lane is free and clear of obstacles. This function also allows confidence when shooting over obstacles with out having to adjust your position. If it’s clear in the clear shot, Take The Shot!

    This is a must have!

Prior to this I had a Bushnell Sport 850 rangefinder so that will be my main source of comparison. When it come to strictly finding range the Sport 850 and The Truth model are very similar, 850yd range, +-1 yard accuracy, 4x magnification similar size and both are easy to use. There is no difference in the range either of them reported when tested against each other for range finding for shooting a rifle at the range out to 250yards. The real difference is the advanced features this one has for bow hunting with the angle compensation for shooting range and clear shot to make sure your arrow hits an obstacle on the way to target.

I’ve used this more for ranging targets for shooting firearms than for shooting bow at this point. I generally start my season with muzzle loader then go to bow later in so at this time I haven’t even set up a stand. I have target shot bow from some elevated platforms that we have at the archery range. I did get the rangefinder calibrated to my bow which allows you to see the top of the arrow flight so you don’t send your shot through branches. Obviously at the range there are no obstacles between the platforms so I have never had a chance to test that feature in the field so I will update in a few weeks when I get the chance to use it.

The angle adjusted range is great though and seems to work well. At the range its easy to confirm ranges and it was spot on. It does occur to me that this feature is more important for a hunter that sets their pins after sighting on the ground but if your lucky enough to have a good archery range with elevated shooting areas this might not be so essential. I also tend to use landmarks to determine ranges when I’m in a stand but if you sight in on flat ground this would make ranging landmarks easier as well.

The archery compensated range goes out to 199 yards which for me is about 140 yards more than I will ever need for hunting because I wont take shots that are too long. Maybe Id try some 100 yard shots just goofing around but 200, no way! 85- yards is more than I meed for rifle but if I ever had the room to get out that far 850 yards would be plenty for target shooting.

Overall this is a great upgrade to the Sport 850 if you hunt with bow. You can make due without these features but for ~$200 this is a worthwhile item when all the archery specific features don’t break the bank over the Sport 850 (~$150). 5 stars!

Have only used it for distance, I haven’t tried any of the bow hunting features. I was ranging trees 20-50 yards away from my tree stand so I’d be able to quickly aim if I got the chance. The distance reading displayed very quickly. It seems durable – I had it in the case and fumbled it out of the tree stand about 15 feet or so to the ground onto pine needles – still works.
