Great surf fishing combo used mainly for Pompano and other fish on Florida beaches. Already had one and and have been happy with how it has performed.

Beautiful equipment, very heavy., June 9, 2015

This is a very nice piece of equipment. I’m a beginner so keep that in mind while reading. I received this combo a week ago and have used it 3 times so far. Here are my observations.

First of all, like some other reviewers said, the bail sometimes trips accidentally when casting because the handle turns. The reel operates very very smoothly, which is great but that smoothness and easy turning is what causes the bail to trip. I’ve taken to holding the bail with my pinky to prevent it from flipping. This is the main reason I knocked one star of the review.

Secondly, it’s very heavy. It’s a bit tiring to use if you’re mainly casting lures. It’s heavier than I expected. It’s rated as heavy duty so keep that in mind.

Lastly, this is a very large capacity reel. Had I known the implication of that I would have bought a smaller version. I put 125 yards of 30 lb test braid on it and it looks like there is hardly any in the spool. This affects casting because the line has to work against the top of the spool, which is very wide. I think the solution is to simply fill the spool up with line so I bought an inexpensive 1000 meter spool of line yesterday. Haven’t received it yet so I can’t say for sure if that will work. I bought this for surf casting so I’m hoping to be able to cast my lures further out from the beach. The way it’s set up now, a 2oz lure only gets maybe 75 feet when it’s not fighting the wind. That’s not very far when the tide is coming in. Honestly, I don’t know if that’s a good casting range or not, but I would like to be able to cast further out.

So chalk these last 2 things up to my inexperience. I’m not going to return it but I would have gone a different direction if I were to purchase again. Before I bought this I was using a crusty old pole and reel I found which had a very short handle on the reel. I have a bit of carpel tunnel and that old one was hurting my left wrist reeling in the line. The Penn solved that in spades because the handle is longer, more comfortable and winds incredibly smoothly, but now my right wrist is feeling some pain from the weight of the rod. Out of the frying pan into the fire.

I hope this helps some other beginners.

Update 7/1/15 : after using this now for about a dozen trips to the beach I have a couple more observations.

Firstly, the bail tripping. I bought a smaller rod and the same Penn reel (the 3000 model – the same but much smaller) at Walmart so I could toss bait with the big one and cast lures with the small one at the same time. After using the small one I discovered that if you turn the handle to just where it trips the bail, it will not accidentally trip the bail while casting. This method works for both large and small reels.

Secondly the guide inserts on the rod are very fragile. I’ve broken 2 of them from dragging a swivel through them. One of the broken ones was at the tip, which I replaced with a kit I found on Amazon. That’s not so great, so be careful with your terminal tackle.

Lastly, I solved my casting issue by putting on 500 yards of power pro braid. Tough stuff and now it casts like a dream. I can throw a diamond jig about 200′ or more. It’s pretty far. I’m happy about that, so on days that I bring one pole, this is the one. I routinely throw bait rigs with this rod that are 4 feet long and 8 ounces or more. It could do more even if you could cast from a high spot.

Overall I’m satisfied and like it even more now that I’ve had some more time with it. The only real drawback is the wimpy guide inserts. I hope no more of them break, because that would be a very negative reelection on the rod. But the reel is great. No bells and whistles, but it’s been dunked in saltwater and sand with no ill effects so far (I always rinse it with a garden hose when I get home). Very smooth still.

It is also easy to dissemble for cleaning and lubrication, April 30, 2015

Purchased for surf fishing. Reel has a smooth retrieve and the instant anti-reverse works as advertised. It took me a little getting used to, because as soon as you stop winding it the anti-reverse stops the reel instantly. It is also easy to dissemble for cleaning and lubrication. The rod has not broken from casting as one rater stated. I don’t know what he did but I have made plenty of casts with mine and have had no issues. The cost for this combo was the same a Tsunami combo from a tackle shop on Carolina Beach, and instead of a fiberglass rod and an all plastic reel you get an ALL graphite rod and a graphite body reel with aluminum spool. I highly recommend this combo!
