This tool is a stouter version of their “Tomcat 3.0” which is a less pretty but technologically superior third generation of their original “Tomcat”, 1988 KNIFE of the YEAR. The FatCat sports a less esthetically pleasing, slightly thinner blade of sophisticated VG-10 stainless steel, an alloy light years ahead of the original Tomcat’s 440C. The FatCat is also blessed with an ergonomically superior design, especially its handle, and its locking mechanism is SOG’s innovative “Arc-Lock”, one that’s far superior to the Tomcat’s standard narrow lockback bar. If you really lubricate the mechanism and depress the button releasing the lock, you can flick the blade into position, a move which is maybe 1/10 second faster than using the standard thumb knob for opening the blade. The knife is ambidexterous with buttons for both righties and lefties (a minority that has grown from 10% of the population to nearly 15% the past 18 years. Another feature is the slight “S” curve of the edge which is more effective for skinning big game. The blade, unlike many newer knives, is a “straight-edge”, that is, it doesn’t not sport a full or partial serration which is better for cutting PVC, rope or other materials that might take longer to slice with a pure straight edge. All told, the knife’s innovations outnumber its few slight drawbacks.
It is a VERY expensive tool for a factory knife, one which SOG justifies by clever promotion of a model they release piece-meal to promote a scarcity of product, month-by-month. Despite its ultra high price, this huge 4 1/2″ blade with a 5 1/4″ handle comes without a belt (or pocket) clip, having only a nylon sheath for carry. Forget about keeping this in your pocket. Even jeams couldn’t hold it for long. For an extra few bucks SOG could have provided a leather belt sheath but because of the model’s length and weight (over a half pound of titanium, steel and Kraton) there may not be a standard after-market heavy-duty sheath for it. A custom job made by a leather craftsman or a handy customer with heavy duty needle and thread is what is needed if you want a durable sheath. Because of the blade length, this knife may violate some carry laws although if you’re out during big game hunting season it may be viewed as appropriate & acceptable. When in doubt, check beforehand.
All in all, if you heart is set on owing such a massive tool in this economy & you can find a discount vendor, you can’t go wrong. Another reviewer complained of ragged blade movement; mine was faster and smoother than I thought such a large blade could move but maybe I was lucky, or he was unlucky. I would suspect SOG would remedy the situation under their waranty but it never hurts to check before buy. Even in prosperous times such a knife would be considered quite an indulgence.
If SOG promises to make good on a non-abused knive, you probably can’t go wrong with getting one. With the exception of Lone Wolf’s Harsey Ranger T3, which is as massive and even a millimeter or two thicker but without the esthetics, this is the biggest folder you would see now that Camillus’ 5 1/2″ titanium-handled knife is no longer being crafted.
Carry and use your FatCat discretely and safely and you’ll enjoy it.

I have little to add to the detailed review above. This knife is large, but is beautifully made and very functional. Mine opens as smoothly as a custom, and locks up tight. Everyone I have shown it to has commented on how light it feels (compared to how it looks). I have never owned a custom knife with better fit and finish. SOG actually places a protective tape over the bolsters to keep them perfect until bought. (It is easily removed and leaves no trace of adhesive.) The list price may seem high, but its market price is slightly over 3 hundred (Amazon is right on the money). This is about as much a semi-custom knife as a Randall, so its price is not high for the class it competes in. If you plan to wear your Armani, attach it to your belt (by the way a big plus is the clip for the sheath, so it’s easy to attach, but stays put). If big is what you want, this is definitely your knife.

I believe this knife is one of the finest folders out there. The arc-lock holds the glorious 4.5 inches of excellent vg-10 steel securely in place. Solid handling thanks to the titanium w/ kraton grip. A very light and very powerful folder. You can safely take on Godzilla with this…or 3000 Spartans.
