I carry this knife for one purpose only—as a backup to, and in defense of, my concealed firearm. If you want a “do-everything” every day carry knife, this is NOT for you (I personally like the small, light, and amazing SOG Flash I for my edc general stuff. Another great knife, in its own right.)! If you want a knife with a safety lock, then the Vulcan VL-03 Tanto is definitely NOT the knife for YOU! The SOG Vulcan Tanto VL-03 is the finest tactical, self-defense folder I have ever placed in my hands…period!!! It replaced my Spyderco Endura 4 (special Flat-Ground version) in this role and that is no easy task, as the Spyderco is a wonderful tactical folder (I still carry it as well). The SOG Vulcan is 5 oz., which is a full 1 oz. heavier than the Spyderco. However, the ingenious design of the clip allows the knife to be seated deeper (read-completely concealed) in my pocket and is actually easier to carry. At first, the Vulcan felt relatively heavier in the hand. Also, I wondered why they did not skeletonize the liner (like the Spyderco) to reduce the weight by a small amount. But, after spending some time with this knife, it became clear. This knife is PERFECTLY BALANCED! Reducing weight in the liner would throw this balance off. The grip afforded by the handle could not be better, even if they had taken a casting of my (average-size) hand! (Note: Another reviewer commented about the blade being exposed slightly when closed. His must have some sort of defect. It is impossible to cut yourself in the closed position.). The Vulcan opens faster and smoother, with a flick of the wrist (for those who know how to use a knife properly), than anything I have ever used. The Arc-Lock mechanism locks the blade like the vault door at Fort Knox! And the blade…well, let me put it this way—the blade alone is worth more than they are charging for this knife. A VG-10 cutting surface, with a brilliantly subtle curve to enhance slicing, layered with 420J2 and perfectly ground (a beautiful piece of Japanese Steel workmanship). In essence, it is made like a masterful Samurai Katana…but, properly adjusted for its size and application (it literally becomes an extension of your hand)!!! I have tried almost every knife out there and can have my choice of any (many of which are custom or semi-custom and cost hundreds of dollars). This is my first choice in a self-defense, tactical folder. It is worthy of being in a museum and certainly worthy of its place in my pocket…or hand!!! For those who are properly trained in the use of a knife, I think you will find the same is true for you.

OK, for someone to rate this knife four stars because he is afraid of his child getting ahold of it, REALLY! And apparently others did not read the specs that tell you how BIG it is or how much it weighs. So if you have kids, or can’t read – do not buy this knife. However, if you want a knife that is solid as the days is long…this is your knife. My hands are medium to small and I have absolutely no trouble opening the blade using the thumb stud, or using the assist lever and a good flick of the wrist. This knife is a great EDC and I would trust it if the S— were to go down. I find it light and ergonomic. I have an assisted open CRKT m16 special forces and I like this knife better, although the double lock on the m16 is superior to the single locking Vulcan Tanto. This is a 5 star knife – do not doubt it for a second.

I agree with the other reviewer, this knife is a bit big for an EDC (every day carry). I have used it as such, it’s not the weight, at 5oz but the thickness of the handle, length and weight combined which makes it not the first choice. I use a SOG Specialty Knives & Tools TWI-20 Twitch XL, Graphite Handle for my EDC and it weighs in at 4oz. But the Twitch XL has a much slimmer profile because the blade is thinner and the handle is thinner.

Why buy this knife? Because you don’t want to carry a fixed blade. With the arc lock it locks open firmly. With the recurve grind on the blade it slices stuff like meat wonderfully. The tip is thick and unlikely to break off easily. The blade itself is made of two metals bonded together and for the price you aren’t going to find another knife with that detail.

As for the cutting surface, I measured it at 3 1/4thinchs the overall length including the finger guard is 3 5/8ths, but you don’t cut with the finger guard. The kick makes opening it easy. Easier than say the SOG Specialty Knives & Tools S95-N Tomcat 3.0 which does not have the kick, although the handle on the Tomcat is nicer making it have a better grip.

The thick blade of this knife does not make a good lunch knife for say peeling an apple or slicing it. The recurve does make it a good slicing for things like cutting up fish or game.

Still a good all around knife.
